Cavapoo (Wavy Coated)
GROOMING TIPS FOR CAVAPOO’S WITH WAVY COAT
The Cavapoo is a relatively new and already much loved pet with a variety of coats, great looks, with wonderful temperaments and personalities.
Although we give our Grooming Tips here we always recommend that you chat with your groomer for tips on bathing and drying your dog and also maintenance of their ears as they are prone to ear infections and, if fur allowed to grow they can quickly build up wax deposits in the ear.
We have a number of customers who are successfully grooming their Cavapoo’s with our products so we know you will be able to get great results using some or all of our products and we welcome feedback from you all on how you achieve your best finishes using Roses products on your Cavapoo.
Generally they require a good brush every 2 to 3 days a good indicator of whether you are brushing enough is to run your hands through their coat if you feel knots tangles and mats developing in their coat, then increase the brushing frequency. Knots etc are caused when the shed hair stays in the coat and if not brushed out it will encourage knots etc. Technique is important here, never groom a dry coat use an anti-tangle conditioner, liberally spraying the area which you will be grooming. As the coat is thick and will require a fair amount of effort and time we would recommend you approach the task in four parts each part including a leg. Start from the paws and work upwards, grooming from root to tip of hair ensuring you remove all loose hair and ensuring there are no mats and tangles. Once this is completed thoroughly rinse out all of the conditioner and then dry your dog. Important note here try to wet only the area you will be grooming and rinse only that areas this will avoid knots etc becoming more entangled in the areas you have not groomed. How to dry efficiently we will cover later.
Bathing your Cavapoo
There are many web sites offering advice on Bathing and Grooming some of which is contradictory so we will keep our recommendations on bathing simple. Frequency of Bathing fortnightly or more often if your dog loves the smelly stuff.
What you will need
A Dog Shampoo (do not use Human Shampoo as they have different formula’s which generally are too harsh for dogs)
An Anti-tangle Conditioner
1 x Roses Grooming and Drying Brush
1 x Roses Mega Absorbent PVA Towel
1 x Roses Large Super Absorbent Microfibre Towel
1 x Pin Head Brush and Bristle Brush plus a good quality Steel Comb
A good supply of treats.
Before Bathing always give your dog a good brush
We would recommend using the shower with a non slip mat but if this not viable use your bath and use a non slip mat or old towel for your dog to stand on, to avoid your dog slipping. Ensure the water is a comfortable temperature not too hot or too cold and then thoroughly wet you dog. Then apply shampoo and here we recommend that you knead the shampoo into the fur not vigorously rub it in as this can cause tangles etc. When completely shampooed then thoroughly wash out all shampoo and do ensure you remove all shampoo as if left in it can cause itchiness. Special note here do avoid water and shampoo getting in your dogs ears and eyes and the best tip we can give here is to wash from the head down the body this minimises the chances of water getting eyes and ears. If using a conditioner repeat this process.
Once bathing of dog is completed use the Mega Absorbent PVA Towel to dab all excess water from the coat, squeezing the towel out often for maximum absorbency, do not rigorously rub the coat as this can cause knotting etc. When drying your dog with the PVA towel a handy tip is to rinse the PVA Towel thoroughly, squeeze out excess water and then gently clean around their eyes repeating if required to clean all tear stains.
When the excess water is removed wrap your Cavapoo in the Large Super Absorbent Towel and scrunch the coat through the towel until the coat is just moist, again avoid vigorous rubbing.
When using the towels always dab dry with the PVA Towel and Dab or Scrunch Dry with the Super Absorbent Towel this will help you to avoid knotting/tangling and the coat becoming frizzy.
Now you can leave the dog to ‘air dry’ or as our customers prefer dry your Cavapoo using the Roses Grooming and Drying Brush. We would recommend that you use the Pin Head Oval Brush as this we are advised best suits the coats and gives the best results. When first using th Roses Brush work at low speed and low temperature and as your dog becomes used to the tool you can increase to full heat and full power. Once you have used the tool a number of times you may find that other brush heads give you better results so please do test the other brush heads during your grooming sessions.
On full power and full heat this activates the light enabling you to inspect the coat, and your dogs skin for any problems, and of course help you to spot any uninvited guest’s in their coat. Ensure you thoroughly dry the coat and if you want the coat to remain wavy, scrunch the fur in your hands after each pass with the grooming/dryng brush.
If during any of the bathing process your dog becomes stressed or dis-comforted then strategic use of the treats will help and soon your dog will look forward to these grooming sessions and actually regard them as pampering sessions. Grooming is a great way of strengthening the bond between your dog you.
We look forward to hearing your experiences and of course receiving pictures of your Cavapoo’s after your Grooming and Pampering Sessions.
