GROOMING TIPS FOR SPANISH WATERDOG

Spanish Waterdog’s are a striking looking dog with an attractive coat of Twirls and Cords, they are a friendly dog but are known to be quite vocal.

The grooming regime for these dogs is very different to most other dogs requiring no brushing or combing. Dependent on your preference the Spanish Waterdog requires a good clip at least once a year and here the clip should be an even length all over the dog, length can be determined by you in association with your groomer. They require a daily hand grooming session where you will run your fingers through the coat to find knots and tangles and when found gently teasing these out with your fingers. As the coat grows and the Twirls and Cords develop this activity done well will reward you with a great looking dog. Attention should be paid to ears and rear legs and if your dog wears a collar in this area also, as Knots and Tangle can occur.

They require regular bathing and most owners suggest that a monthly bath is ideal.

Before bathing do ensure that all knots and tangles have been removed, as bathing can make knots etc ore difficult to detangle, and then make sure you have all tools required.

1 x Roses Grooming Brush (Optional)

1 x Roses Mega Absorbent PVA Towel

1 x Roses Super Absorbent Microfibre Towel

A gentle dog shampoo, (do not use Human Shampoo’s, they are often too astringent for dogs).

A selection of Treats.

We would recommend you use the shower to wash your dog but if not available please use the bath and ideally wash the dog using a shower attachment as this will enable you to thoroughly wet the dog and also rinse all shampoo out of the coat. For the comfort of your dog please lay down a non-slip mat or an old towel to prevent them from slipping. Once you have thoroughly soaked the dogs coat then apply the shampoo by gently kneading the coat ensuring you get the shampoo down to the base of the coat and onto the skin. Once thoroughly shampooed then rinse off the coat and making sure no shampoo is left to avoid any itchiness on the skin for your dog.

Now to drying firstly use the Mega Absorbent Dog Towel and DAB (not scrub as this can cause knotting and tangling) all over squeezing out the cloth regularly to ensure maximum absorbency. Once all excess water is removed then wrap your dog in the Large Super Absorbent Microfibre Towel and again Dab dry until the fur is just damp.

To dry most people suggest you air dry which will encourage curling of the coat but in winter months we would recommend you use Th Roses Grooming and Drying Brush but as a hair dryer not brush. Remove brush heads and dry all of your dog whilst running your fingers through the coat. If dog is initially a little nervous of the noise use treats to encourage and when on initial sessions. use Low Speed and Low Heat and as your dog becomes familiar you can increase to Full Power and High heat which on our tool is set at 86 degrees, to avoid discomfort to your prt. On full power you will be able to make full use of the light to check condition of dog’s skin and spot any unwanted guests.

We look forward to hearing your experiences and of course receiving pictures of your Spanish Waterdog, s after your Grooming and Pampering Sessions.
