Why Microchipping is So Important!

Every pet owner knows that their furry companion is more than just an animal, they’re family. That’s why keeping them safe is always a top priority. National Microchipping Month is the perfect reminder to take a simple yet powerful step to protect your pet: microchipping.

What is Microchipping?

Microchipping is a quick and safe procedure where a tiny chip, about the size of a grain of rice, is placed just under your pet’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades. This chip contains a unique identification number that can be read by a scanner at veterinary practices, rescue centres, police stations, and animal welfare organisations.

Why Microchipping Matters

Collars and tags can fall off or become damaged, but a microchip provides permanent identification. If your pet ever gets lost, a microchip significantly increases the chances of being reunited quickly and safely.

Here are just a few key benefits:

  • Permanent ID: Unlike tags, microchips can’t be lost or removed.
  • It’s a Legal Requirement: Under The Microchipping of Cats and Dogs (England) Regulations 2023, all dogs must be microchipped by 8 weeks of age, and all owned cats in England must be microchipped by 20 weeks of age. Read more HERE
  • Quick Reunions: Shelters and vets can scan your pet and access your contact details.
  • Peace of Mind: Knowing your pet has a reliable form of identification reduces worry.

Which Pets Should Be Microchipped?

Microchipping is recommended for all cats and dogs, whether they spend most of their time indoors or outdoors. Even indoor pets can accidentally escape, making identification essential.

The ideal ages for microchipping are:

  • Dogs: By 8 weeks old (and this is a legal requirement in the UK).
  • Cats: By 20 weeks old in England (also a legal requirement).

However, pets can be microchipped at almost any age, so it’s never too late to have your pet protected.

Is It Safe?

Yes, microchipping is a routine procedure that’s no more uncomfortable than a standard vaccination. It doesn’t require surgery or anaesthesia, and your pet can resume normal activities immediately afterwards.

Keep Your Details Updated

A microchip is only effective if your contact information is up to date. If you move house or change your phone number, make sure to update your pet’s registration details. Failure to keep details current could make it difficult to reunite you with your pet if they go missing.

Take Action This Month

National Microchipping Month is the ideal time to ensure your pet is protected. Whether you’re microchipping your pet for the first time or checking that your details are current, this small step can make a life-changing difference.
