Course Details
About this course
This qualification has been developed to introduce Learners to the dog grooming industry and is ideal for those looking to work as an assistant in a grooming salon. It provides an overview of the duties and responsibilities associated with the role, along with the key legislation that governs working practices within a grooming environment. Learners will also gain insight into the typical tasks that a grooming assistant may be expected to perform.
The course includes essential knowledge such as basic canine anatomy and physiology, first aid awareness, hazard identification, and risk assessment. In addition, Learners will be introduced to commonly used grooming tools and equipment. Practical training forms a key part of the qualification, allowing Learners to practise handling and grooming techniques including bathing, drying, clipping, de-shedding and nail trimming. By combining theory with hands-on learning, the qualification helps Learners develop the knowledge and practical abilities required to support professional dog groomers.
This Award is designed as a shorter and more focused programme than the wider Level 3 qualifications, making it particularly suitable for beginners or individuals exploring the industry for the first time. The practical emphasis helps build confidence and foundational workplace skills that reflect current industry expectations. It also provides a clear pathway for Learners who wish to progress to Level 3 dog grooming qualifications, although completion of this Award is not required before moving to that level.
Elements of the qualification align with selected knowledge, skills and behaviours from the Level 2 Dog Groomer Apprenticeship Standard (ST0943). While it does not cover the full apprenticeship standard, it can support learning within an apprenticeship programme. Further information is available from iPET Network.
